Recycle Right NY - “Guide to Glass Recycling”

Did you know that certain forms of glass are not accepted in your home recycling bin? Because of the varying makeup of different types of glass, items such as wine glasses, assorted drinking cups, mirrors, light bulbs, and ceramics (whether broken, or whole) cannot be recycled. The only glass that should be placed into your recycling bin includes glass bottles and jars.
Glass Recycling Tips:
Before putting glass bottles or jars in your recycling bin -
- Check with your municipality or private hauler for more information about your local glass recycling program.
- For bottles and jars that are accepted in your local recycling program, give them a rinse and be sure to remove the corks and lids.
Glass Reuse Tips:
Glass items that you no longer want and are non-recyclable can often be reused.
- You can turn cups into flower vases or pen holders and jars into to-go containers.
- Donating the items is an option too, but if the glass is broken it belongs in the trash.
- If you’re unsure about an item, “Know Before You Throw” and look to your local recycling guidelines for more information.
