DEC Announces Reopening of Lake George Beach

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will reopen Lake George (AKA Million Dollar) Beach today, Saturday, June 17, after test results showed that the beach is safe for swimming. The beach will be open extended hours this evening.

Test results from samples collected on Friday show levels of E. coli below the Department of Health (DOH) sanitary threshold. Due to a prior rain event, DEC delayed opening the beach out of an abundance of caution.

Beginning today, the beach is scheduled to open to swimming seven days a week through Labor Day.

DEC, the town and village of Lake George, and the Lake George Association are working diligently to identify and eliminate the source of E.coli in the waters at the beach. DEC's investigation includes extensive sampling to track down potential sources of bacteria, and the agency will be working with state and local officials as necessary to quickly implement actions to identify and terminate any continuing pathogen contamination. Sampling will be conducted on a daily basis to ensure the safety of the swimming area.
