Ohio EPA Holding Public Hearing about Revisions to Hazardous Waste Rules

Ohio EPA is taking public comments on proposed rule changes regarding the management of hazardous waste generation, treatment, storage and disposal, including rules for management of universal waste and used oil.

A public hearing about amendments to the rules will be held Jan. 5, 2017. The hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Ohio EPA, located at the Lazarus Government Center, 50 W. Town Street, Suite 700, Columbus. All visitors should bring photo identification in order to register at the security desk.

The purpose of the proposed rule changes is to update Ohio’s rules so they continue to be equivalent to their amended federal counterpart rules and accomplish the required five-year review.

Comments on the rules package proposal may be presented at the hearing or submitted in writing to Kit Arthur, Ohio EPA-DERR, Lazarus Government Center, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049, or email katherine.arthur@epa.ohio.gov. The public comment period ends Jan. 5, 2017.

To see the proposed rules and get more information about them, visit http://epa.ohio.gov/derr/derrrules/rcra.aspx and click on the “Proposed Rules” tab.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
