Ohio EPA Awards Grant to Address Scrap Tire Processing and Market Development

To improve markets for scrap tires across the state, Ohio EPA has awarded funding for two projects to assist companies in developing markets for reusing scrap tires.

  • Jackson Township is supporting Liberty Tire Services of Ohio, LLC in the manufacturing and processing of scrap tires. Ohio EPA is awarding $350,000 to purchase a scrap tire processing equipment unit.
  • Cuyahoga County Soil and Water Conservation District is partnering with the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation to purchase processing equipment to create geo cells comprised of scrap tire material. Ohio EPA is awarding $50,000.

These grant investments will benefit Ohioans by providing an environmentally friendly outlet for used tires. The first grant will allow the applicant to convert scrap tires into a finished product that can be sold to the tire derived fuel market. The second project allows the applicant to demonstrate the effective use of scrap tire material in the construction of geo cells for soil stabilization engineering designs.

The program provides financial assistance for businesses that propose projects to develop successful scrap tire markets or to innovate scrap tire-based products.

Ohio EPA is responsible for implementing statewide waste reduction, recycling market development, scrap tire and litter prevention programs. Ohioans are encouraged to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled-content products.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
