Ohio EPA Accepting Proposals For Recycling and Litter Prevention Grants; Schedules Information Session and Webinar

Ohio EPA is accepting applications for four types of recycling-related grants to be awarded in 2017. Grant applications for all four programs are due Feb. 3, 2017, and the Agency will offer two opportunities for assistance.

  • An information meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, to explain eligibility requirements and the grant application process. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m.at the Ohio Department of Transportation office on 1980 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43223. Those attending should be prepared to present a photo I.D. for security purposes.

Ohio EPA administers four grants through the Agency’s Recycling and Litter Prevention program:

Community Development Grants allow Ohio communities to support and expand community recycling and litter prevention efforts. These grants, provide funding for recycling collection and materials processing equipment, including new infrastructure to collect and process materials such as construction and demolition debris, electronics (such as cell phones or computers), glass, paper-based materials, and plastics.

Litter Management Grants improve local environments through litter prevention, beautification and waste reduction. Ohio communities can receive funding for litter cleanup and tire amnesty collection efforts. Grant proposals must include litter cleanup on public land, roadsides or public waterways.

Market Development Grants are offered to Ohio businesses and nonprofits to purchase equipment and build infrastructure to develop successful markets for recyclable materials and related products. Proposals should focus on materials collected or processed in Ohio, and require a governmental agency sponsorship.

Scrap Tire Grants are available to Ohio business and local communities that are interested in either modifying manufacturing operations to accept scrap tire material, expand a tire processing operation, develop or utilize the material in civil engineering projects or product manufacturing. Scrap material must be collected or processed in Ohio.

Grant awards will be announced during April 2017, with funding available in July. For more information, applicants can download grant information: www.recycleohio.gov, or contact Chet Chaney, Environmental Supervisor, at Chet.Chaney@epa.ohio.gov, (614) 728-0043, or Marie Barnett, Grants Administrator, at Marie.Barnett@epa.ohio.gov, (614) 705-1019.

The grant programs are available to a variety of eligible applicants including municipal corporations, counties, townships, villages, state colleges or universities, solid waste management districts or authorities, park districts, health districts, nonprofit organizations, statewide recycling and litter prevention trade associations, “Keep Ohio Beautiful” affiliates, boards of education and businesses.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
