Ohio EPA Issues Final Permit Allowing Expansion of Mahoning Landfill
Ohio EPA has approved a permit that will allow both lateral and vertical expansion of the Mahoning Landfill, Inc., a municipal solid waste landfill located at 3510 Garfield Road, New Springfield.
The permit allows the landfill to expand its disposal area by 51.6 acres, increasing landfill capacity to 24.11 million cubic yards. The maximum amount of waste the landfill can accept is increasing from 2,500 to 4,000 tons per day.
The expansion request was presented and discussed in Springfield Township during an Ohio EPA public hearing held in May of this year. From this session, Ohio EPA has generated a response to comments. Issuance of the landfill permit can be appealed to the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC). Appeals generally must be filed within 30 days of issuing a final action; therefore, Ohio EPA recommends that anyone filing an appeal should contact ERAC at (614) 466-8950 for more information.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
