Ohio EPA Holds Sept. 28th Public Hearing about State Implementation Plan for Fine Particulate Matter 

Ohio EPA will take comments on Ohio’s plan to meet the 2012 federal fine particulate matter standard in the Cleveland area by Dec. 31, 2021. 

Ohio EPA will hold a public hearing in the Cleveland area regarding the plan on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. at the Parma-Snow Branch Library, 2121 Snow Road, Parma.

Fine particulate matter refers to small airborne particles that are about 1/30th the diameter of a human hair. The State Implementation Plan (SIP) includes meteorological and emissions data from the nonattainment area and modeling information that shows air quality in the Cleveland area will improve through current and upcoming regulations. The Cleveland area, which includes Cuyahoga and Lorain counties, was designated as a nonattainment area for the standard on April 15, 2015. 

After considering comments, Ohio EPA will submit its final plan and attainment demonstration to U.S. EPA for review and approval. 

Comments on the SIP proposal may be presented at the hearing or submitted in writing to Ohio EPA Division of Air Pollution Control, Attention: Laura Woods, Lazarus Government Center, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049, or email laura.woods@epa.ohio.gov. The public comment period ends Sept. 28, 2016.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
