Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to Hamilton County Organization
Teachers at Symmes Elementary School will receive training to conduct scientific inquiry and monitoring of the nature trail at Sycamore Community Schools’ nine-acre wooded watershed, funded in part with a $3,447 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant to the school. A total of seven grants were awarded statewide for $32,319.
Teachers will be trained to help facilitate the environmental education of 500 kindergarten through fourth grade students at Symmes Elementary as well as 1,500 in Sycamore Community Schools’ three other elementary buildings.
The trail’s restoration and removal of invasive species allow for hands-on learning opportunities for students to design and conduct field investigations. Students and teachers will communicate these to the community at the end of the school year.
The next OEEF application deadline will be July 15, with an electronic letter of intent to apply due no later than July 8.
The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund online or at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
