Today, millions of people across the U.S. are celebrating America Recycles Day by participating in events designed to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and purchasing recycled goods and products.
New Yorkers generate nearly five pounds of waste per person each day, and many of these materials can be reused and recycled, saving energy and landfill space. Recycling is an important and necessary component to diverting additional materials from the waste stream, so make sure you do your part to encourage recycling by recycling right:
- Check your local ordinances to see what is accepted before you toss it in the bin. What is and is not recyclable varies between municipalities and communities.
- Check out DEC’s webpage on Buying Recycled! Look for products or packaging made with post-consumer recycled content.
- Remember, it’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: so, reduce your use of disposable goods by making use of reusable products and reuse or re-purpose items that can safely be reused.
- Don’t forget to compost organic waste where you can.
